Before writing the article I experimented with a dry top, farmer john and tight neoprene spray skirt. In about 1 minute the water made it's way up the dry suit and it was running into the farmer john - down my chest in the underarms etc. Don't forget, you're neck deep in water and the water is trying to travel up under the drytop. there has to be a tremendously tight seal there to work.

It's certainly better than nothing and if you can get out of the water fast it will work - but it's a big false sense of security for honest to goodness winter paddling unles you stay close to shore where you can change the wet frigid shirts you're wearing immediately.
