I suggest renting kayaks for a while. That'll give you an idea of what qualities to look for in design. If there are local kayakers try out their boats as well. Another idea is plan on attending one of the kayak symposiums this summer. You'll learn more in a day talking to other builders than you'd learn reading books.

That said, there are some good books available. Nick's book is just one of the many boat building boats out there. You can build from a book but I suggest getting plans also. Having plans really makes a difference.

As far as kits go, I haven't used one yet because I've had access to a wood working shop. Now that the shops gone I'm thinking of using a kit for my next boat. It saves lots of time and (almost) everything you need is right there. They can be a good financial deal too because you won't need to buy al those tools. Of course some people on this site have been use boat building as an excuse to buy power tools for years.
