S&G: Hatch Gasket materials - help

I am getting close to completing my Pygmy Arctic Tern. I could use some suggestions about the hatch gaskets.

I have the 1/4 (6+mm) inch weather strip material that came with my kit. I used that stuff on my Coho and it works OK but the hatches sit up a little too high even under tension. The material itself is variable in thickness. I would like these hatches to be nice and flush. I am looking at my mousepad which is made from a nice firm neoprene material which looks like it would grip the hatches nicely. Not sure it would compress enough to make a nice tight seal though.

I am working with a 4mm spacer between deck and hatch lips so I have 4mm of space for the (compressed) gasket material.

Anyone have experience with any other materials?? Suggestions?

Thanks much

Mike
