I'm planning on mounting the footbraces in my Chesapeake17 using the method described on the One Ocean Kayaks site (fasten rails to side of hull using stainless steel nuts embedded in epoxy reinforced with fibreglass strands). The instructions describe using a hacksaw to cut back the heads of the bolts to allow them to fit down into the opening in the rail. I noticed that there is more than enough material in the two sides of the rail to accomodate using a 1/2-inch drill bit to remove enough material to allow the original bolt to pass. Using a drill press I first centred the rail using the 1/4-inch bit I had used to drill out the threads. Then I clamped the rail to the drill press, changed to the 1/2-inch bit, and slowly removed the excess material. It worked great, see image for the result.
