I seem to recall something of the sort, but (as I recall) the discussion at the time was in regards to sprayskirts. In that case it is better to err a bit towards a longer cockpit opening, and a bit more space between the back of the paddler and the coaming, as that would allow a bit of slack in the sprayskirt, and possibly prevent it from detaching with the paddler's movement.
