I have put final 'fill coat' onto the inside of the wherry and after it hardened I started to sand the gunwales. I have actually used a power hand planer to level even the top of the four layers of wood (gunwale, spacer, boat side and inwale) Things look nice but the sanding will take days to make things look great. First of all the breasthook needs to be completely filed down and sanded into a shape of a slightly elevated dome. The end of the gunwales at the stern is also needed to level flush with the transom.

I have also sanded the sharp edges to be slightly round.
