AS far as staple holes go - when I built my two canoes, I used finishing nails driven part way in instead of staples. I was careful to line them up in the center of each strip. I just let the epoxy fill the holes and they make a nice uniform design around the hull at 1 foot intervals. I kind of like the look.
No useful insights on the other two items.
