Various varieties of Spruce have a pretty good history of use in native crafts. The roots are easily made into a pliable rope-like material that was used for lashing the birch bark to the frames of birchbark canoes. The sap was thickened or boiled down into a tar that could be applied hot to the seams, and was a waterproof sealant when it cooled.
