Here's a little trick that makes the folks down at Tuckaway timbers laugh every time I walk through the door....

If you can't figure out what a piece of wood is going to wet out like turn the rough cut board to its sawn edge and spit on it. It won't give you the luster of a finished boat but the color and tone will show up immediatly.

If your not buying sawn wood, Ussually you can find a chip of the wood species laying around and you can spit on.

I know what most wood will come up to, but individual boards with will have slight color differences, veining etc.

I suppose it might be more refined to bring a wet rag.

In any case, it will give you the info ya need.
