: I have an old Craftsman table saw with the really nice, heavy cast iron
: table.

: Do you think it would be worth having the top machined so the miter gauge
: slots are "inverted-T" shaped, rather than rectangular, so I can
: use them to hold down jigs, feather boards, etc.

: Or should I just invest in a new saw...Delta Contractor's saw, maybe?

The old craftsman seem nice but they just can't match a newer Delta contractor's saw.

I'd suggest looking for a used Delta contractor's saw. The one built in the mid 80s early
90s are the best. I picked up one with a mobil base for $500.

The only thing I hated about this vintage is that the power switch is mounted under the table
on the left side. I had just replaced the safety power switch on my Makita portable saw, so I
just bought another switch and wired it just below the fence track on the front left.

This is one of those power switches with the recessed "ON" button and the big red projecting "OFF'
buttons. The way the switch is installed I can shut off the power with my hip.

I use this all the time almost without thought. It is great if I'm feeding a piece of wood and it
binds, i don't have to take my hands off the wood to shut off the power.

All the best,

Rob Macks
