Hi Guys

I should have just asked:

What length is the internal strong back for building the 17' Guillemot?

but I'm trying to understand where everything comes from, making it as easy as possible, before being committed to building.

So lets say I buy a kit with precut forms for the Guillemot.
Would the following be true

Stongback length = ( 17' - ( Stern form length + Bow Form length) )

No not quite, I'm looking at Nicks book as I write maybe I need to re read it with a different perspective, because the end forms need to be mounted, 11 1/2 " from the end which is tapred. Figure 4-15 on page 57 sugests that the bow form is 22.79", hhmm whats that in imperial nomenclature? inconsistent with his measurement units!!, and the stern form is 22.70".

The strong back length = 17' - ((22.79" - 11.5") + (22.70" - 11.5"))

= 204' - ((11.29 + 11.2)

= 204" - 22.49

= 181.51"

= 15.125'

This dosn't tie up with what Nick suggets in his table on page 175, 14'11", obviously there is more to it than simple maths!!!

Maybe I should learn about lofting?

Thanks

Derek

: Hi All

: I was re-reading Nicks book looking into the details of the strong back.
: His decsription of how to build one from ply on page 70 suggests a 16' strong
: back. On page 175 the materials table suggests a 14' 11" strong back,
: I assume as this is under the Guillimot heading that is the length
: required for this Kayak.

: It seems "Home Depot' here in Ottawa store 16' strongbacks so they are
: seperated at each end with nothing in the middle so they are all bent.
: Any suggestions on straightening them

: Thanks

: Derek
