I tracked down my friend that used to cut the perfect plugs in hardwood and matched them in wood so well that I had a hard time finding the plug. The reason I find this so interesting is because holes and blemishes in the wood of kayaks could be concealed without wood flour, etc. mismatches. I tried this with my 1/2" plug cutters in walnut and the walnut edges burned badly. My friend, a real tool nut, said the secrete was all in the cutter and how it was ground. He said the co. had two plug cutter types, a short one and a long one. He used the long one which cut lots continuos plugs which rode upward and out at the top of the cutter. The Greenlee plug cutter he used belonged to the company and were expensive he said. I can’t come up with the "Greenlee Tool Co., 4455 Boeing, Rockford, IL" on the net and I suspect they may be out of business but I have found Greenlee tools being auctioned.
