: Hi Folks,

: I want some nudging here. What should I do next? I would like to build sea
: kayaks for me and my wife. I am 6 feet 230 lbs, she is 5'8" and
: weighs 150. This time I am not in a hurry but will be money pressed from
: time to time.

: First I thought about buying a kit and build the second kayak side by side.

: Then I thought about just buying plans and cutting the wood my self. The only
: problem I have right now is that Pygmy does not have any plans for big
: folks like me.

: I also thought that perhaps I should attempt a strip build kayak but this
: area I never researched enough. How expensive is it to build a stripper?
: Is the weight comparable to kit boats?

: Help me out here.

Well, If I had just finished building a boat, and the lakes were not all frozen where I live, I think I'd try and enjoy my new Wherry a bit.

Maybe buy 'kayak craft' by Ted Moores (cedar strip), 'the strip build sea kayak' by Nick Shade (cedar Strip), and/or 'The New kayak shop' by ??? (stich and glue). Then go out for a row, sit back float around, drop a fishing line, and read the book. Just be careful you do not become so engrossed in the books that you float way out to sea. There are other books too, but I do not have any of them.

Stitch and glue is alot faster than ceder strip. Also if you do not own a table saw (or a band saw) and a router, you will have to go and drop money on them for a cedar strip boat. (although some folks do not use the router)

Oh, there seem to be a few 'meet at the beaches' going on, you should go down and try a few kayaks out. Take your boat, I'm sure lots of people would be interested in trying that too. I guess the point is try to test out some kayaks before deciding.

I know I do not have to tell you to "keep us posted".

have fun

Myrl
