Some longer kayaks have a waterline length that is 14' or shorter due to overhanging ends. I have found that a 14' long kayak with a waterline length close to the overall length ( actually 13'9" ) is every bit as fast for cruising and tracks just as well as a longer kayak - it all depends on design of course. Due to the shorter length you save weight so as Lee says it makes it easier to toss it up on the roof rack of your vehicle.

Some kayak manufacturers and kit boat companies have for a few years now been offering these shorter kayaks so give one a try - I'm convinced they are the way to go for the majority of kayakers.
