Strip: Update - Planing Strip Bevels on the Boat *Pic*

I've been using my homemade compass plane to bevel strips for my deck. I run it along each strip after it's installed on the boat and the next strip fits snug into the bevel. It does work - the joints are very tight. My original inpiration for the idea was from a builder who used a laminate trimmer to accomplish the same task (don't remember who). I think what I miss most about bead/cove is the self-aligning of the strips. I also have to touch up each bevel quite a bit with a chisel; The plane can't reach the extreme bow/stern ends of the strip.

Otherwise, the plane itself cuts great; it shoots an unbroken ribbon of shavings out the opening above the blade. In this picture, the sole has not been fully rounded yet; it has a sharper radius now. The back of the plane usually rides slightly above the work. I can think of about ten easier ways to accomplish this task but I guess I wanted to have the plane anyway. I'm glad it's on hand as an option. I would recommend plane making to anyone that likes a good challenge, has a Jones for planes and is a little bit crazy. I would not really recommend this as a primary method of stripping.

I should have some good pictures of the deck stripping soon. I don't know if there is any interest on this topic... I've never let that stop me before :D
