I am in the last stages of my first boat and have a few more questions:
· The Pygmy instructions indicate that I should attach the hip braces to the hull and coaming with a strip of tape. It seems to me this could be a high stress area that may warrant a fillet. If so, do I fillet first and then glass over this or is it the reverse.
· If I should fillet the area mentioned above, can I cut some small pieces of glass cloth and mix into the thickened epoxy. I have read that glass fibers add strength, but am unsure of what size these pieces should be.
· The footbraces came with bolts only. It seems like a nut would be necessary in the track to prevent loosening. Has anybody attached their braces with the bolt only?
· I am going to insert bolts and screws for various attachments and wonder if I epoxy the screw holes and let cure before finishing the attachment or do I screw these into wet epoxy. The reason I ask is that System Three literature states that a stainless steel screw potted in uncured epoxy will deteriorate in the presence of seawater due to lack of oxygen.
· Pygmy says to use contact cement for seat pad attachments, etc. Is this the same as rubber cement? And is there a waterproof version.
Thanks in advance once again for any help. I must have spent 30 minutes in the garage last night walking around the boat in utter disbelief. A kayak (as .imperfect as it is) built with my own hands …...with a little help from Pygmy's laser guided saws:-)
