Seeking: Long kayak short car rack

Having just completed my Night Heron, I have just noticed that it extends considerably over the racks of my car (Mazda Tribute). My idea is to build a "T" angled off the hitch of my car to stabilize the stern of the kayak.
The extension would be made out of PVC (Sch-40 or Sch-80). Surely someone else has already "gone down this road" and would like to share either their plan or experiences. Thanks
