I read that book a long long time ago. It's a bit old in it's philosophy since it came from the world of glassing big boats - many of them planked and with no glass or epoxy coatings on the inside. As someone else mintioned in this thread, many of the glassig jobs he refered to were done on old boats with questionable wood and done on the outside only.
Two things:
1. Many boats are now epoxy and glass sheathed and last forever with total encapsulation (small craft and big boats - from new) and... what other option is there.
2. Many new big boats are made of plywood or cross laminating veneers and epoxy coated and sheathed rather than planking. These seem to last foreverand the glass sheathing stays in tact.
