Hi Gordon, I'm intrigued by the idea too. The project is in my queue... now just to do it. There are plans/instructions in Nick Schade's book "The Strip-Built Sea Kayak" http://www.guillemot-kayaks.com/Book That would be a strong "Buy" recommendation :D Also make a trip to your local kayak shop to steal ideas - the mechanism is not that complex.
