Material: Deck plate weights?

About to start my Tern 14, I didn't want to do the hatches so I thought of doing deck plates in the bulkheads. 6" forward and 4" aft. This would give me ventilation and by drilling a small hole in the cover I would have vacuum relief. For a tight boat I could get a second set of covers should I need it waterproof.
I liked the Beckson with the clear covers, thought it would show any condensation, until I picked one up, really heavy. The solid covers were lighter but still too heavy. The lightest I could find today were the Sure-Seal by T.H. marine not clear but lighter. Any ideas or suggestions would be really welcome.
Thanks...
