Material: The woodworkers store/Rockler and Poplar

I was in the woodworkers store/Rockler just north of Lake Union in Seattle today. They are having a 40% off sale on all wood tomorrow Friday 9-13 to Sunday 9-15. They let me get the sale price today so I bought a nice piece of Alaskan Yellow Cedar, some poplar, and a piece of cherry veneer.

Speaking of poplar, why don't people use it for kayak building? It is a light color wood that has a hint of the color green in it. It looks like it would be easy to work with and is light weight. I bought the piece to play around with since it is cheap ($2.70/bd ft minus 40%), and to see how it looks with epoxy on it.
