I did some thinking about how to easily make a kayak yoke for those carries just a little too long to have the kayak on one shoulder. I have occasionally put the kayak up on my head, but once in a while that gives me a wry neck the next day. 49 year old necks should not frequently hold up a 44 pound kayak in vertical compression.

I did not like the clamp on yokes that are commercially available. I did not want to stress the wood and fiberglass coaming in a single spot like a screw clamp might do.

I came up with a small wooden bracket on each side of the coaming which is held in place by a cord that goes around the rim of the coaming. Most of the cord does not stretch, but a small section is made of bungie cord to allow me to stretch the cord around the rim.

The thing took me less than an hour to cobble up and I used all scrap materials, including a couple scraps of Minicel foam for padding.

Disadvantage of this yoke, is that it is built for a specific kayak, and is not easily adjustable. You may put some adjustments in. I did in a couple previous versions. But they added complexity and took away from the ease in building this thing.

If you build one, please write me to let me know how it worked for you
