Paddle: which way to cut a 4x4 for a greenland paddle?

After reading about the virtues of greenland paddles in this forum and various people's web sites, I have got to try one too! I printed up Chuck Holst's directions. I went to my local Home Depot and they did not seem to have anything suitable. Then I tried my local Loews and found that they have some really nice looking (and smelling!) 8 foot WRC 4x4s.

Now the question is which way to have them cut one into 2x4s. Do I want the finer grain lines on the width or thickness of my 2x4 blanks? Does it matter?
