Hi Myrl,

Just to make sure I understand what you said, if the magnet ends up with one layer of glass between it and the surface the hatch sits on, then what you propose should work fine. You want the distance between the magnet pairs to be very, very small. That means you need to use gasket material that compresses easily. I have magnets in two of my boats but they were retrofits. So I ended up drilling a hole in the hatch lip to the depth of the magnets (1/8"). This subject has been discussed quite a bit recently. You might try doing a search if you want to know more. Hope this helps. BTW, the magnets I used were 1/2 by 1/8.

: I'm going to buy some magnets from lee valley today. These will be used to
: hold down the hatchs.

: How do get these into the hatch lip?

: I'm building the flush hatches. I assume when I'm building the fiber glass
: lip, I put one layer of figerglass (6oz). place the magnets on this,
: fillet in place, and then cover this with serveral more layers of
: fiberglass.

: Is it that simple?
