: Hi Myrl,

: Just to make sure I understand what you said, if the magnet ends up with one
: layer of glass between it and the surface the hatch sits on, then what you
: propose should work fine. You want the distance between the magnet pairs
: to be very, very small. That means you need to use gasket material that
: compresses easily. I have magnets in two of my boats but they were
: retrofits. So I ended up drilling a hole in the hatch lip to the depth of
: the magnets (1/8"). This subject has been discussed quite a bit
: recently. You might try doing a search if you want to know more. Hope this
: helps. BTW, the magnets I used were 1/2 by 1/8.

Hi Ted,

You have it right, I should have one layer of glass over the top of the magnet. To keep the moisture off, and ensure it will stay put.

I did not get my magnets today :( , I got to busy here at work, and could not race off at lunch. It will have to wait until Saturday.

As for magnet size, I'm not sure, I want to re-check out the holding power. I currently think I'll go with the smaller ones. however I expect I may want a backup latching system. I was pretty excited about the twist lock gizmo that Chip was building, but Ross' method would leave the cover a little cleaner. we will see.

For the magnets embedded in the hatch, will they hold with just epoxy to keep them in place, or should I have a single layer of glass over that as well?

I tried a search earlier, but gave up to soon, I will re-try that.

thanks

Myrl
