Haven't done it, but would like to build with Balsa-Wood. :) Classified as a hardwood. :)

Actually, I don't see any reason why hardwoods can't be used throughout. They can be cut a bit thinner to save some of that extra weight. The boat will be a few lbs heavier, but will still be functional.
