About that verticle dowel... size doesn't make much difference so you could size up the dowel and instead of using those wood strip/stick peddles, do a wing affect with ply and classed on both sides.

Appreciate your effort on this and glad you haven't given up. I think it's a worth-while cause. You've done well with parts "Not Made" for this purpose.
