I live in Holland, MI, the hometown of that guy died in the Waugoshance Point accident, and couldn't figure out how someone, assisted, could have died in those conditions. Thanks for the article, Tom, because I didn't know that he was both without pump and wetsuit. I was on a paddling vacation when it happened, and I had a number of people mention that to me as soon as I came back -- including a friend who's building a skin-on-frame and who's wife is probably not going to let him finish it now. I'd read that the 2 kayakers had struggled for 3 hours, so I thought that he must have had a wetsuit on, but apparently not. I wonder if they had a paddle float. I would have thought that the capsized guy could have gotten back into his swamped kayak with his paddlefloat in place as an outrigger while the other guy went for help. And neglecting all the other stuff that they should have had with them, a VHF radio alone would have saved them with all the boat traffic through the straits.
