I expoxied Geyrfugl over December-February last winter in an attached,
uninsulated single-car garage, with less-then-perfectly-fitting double
doors (some draught under these, especially when the pedestrian access
door at the other end was opened.)

I reckon the secret is not to let the place cool, so that your heater has to raise the temperature. I found a 2 kw thermostatic convector heater kept the place at c 20 degrees C fairly consistently, despite frosts, provided I left it switched on (for three months )-: and didn't have the door open for any significant time. With your bigger space, you'll probably have a slightly
bigger surface area to lose heat through, but I think the real key is to
prevent draughts. Don't be so obsessive that you are overcome by fumes though!

Unfortunately, that garage isn't long enough for an adult-sized kayak. Does anyone have good ideas for a heat-retaining structure to go inside a huge barn? I had in mind a wooden frame covered in two skins of thin plywood, but this looks as though it is going to be prohibitively expensive ....
