Marcel, Good morning,

I decided 2 months ago that I needed to heat my 2 car garage to be able to keep working on building projects.

I had tried heating the garage with resistance heaters in past winters and lost the battle.

I bought a 40000 BTU propane heater and attached it to a spare propane tank from my grill. I made sure all the switches were off, and plugged it in to the electric. The fan came on and the starter started sparking at a cadence of about 80 thumps per second. I checked to make sure the switch was really off. It was. I read the directions and it did not say anything about being on when the switch was set to off. So I boxed it back up and took it back to the store.

I brought its replacement home and set it up in my pool shed where I was working on winterizing the equipment. When I plugged it in, the fan came on and the starter began thumping. I rolled my eyes toward the ceiling and decided to see how it would work. First thing I noted was that the machine made a *lot* of noise. I could hear conversation, but it was not a relaxing sort of sound. I was running a pump to empty the hot tub and did not hear when the pump cavitated after the tub emptied - fact is I did not hear the pump motor at all. I also noticed that I did not care much that the pump was empty and trying to pump air. I really just felt a little tired....

Of course, those are my personal hypoxia symptoms. Feeling just a little giddy, I went outside and then cautiously opened the doors to the shed, and turned the thing off. It was trying to kill me with carbon monoxide. Despite the inch wide gap under the double door and the wind whistling through that gap, the thing was trying to kill me! I took it back too. I told them that it did not turn off either (though that is probably the way it is designed) and that it put a lot of carbon monoxide out.

I brought home a kerosene heater. 24000 BTUs. I read the directions carefully. It suggested that it could be used indoors, though not in an enclosed bathroom. I set it up in the garage and in an hour the 30 degree garage was a nice 65 degrees and the cold floor was beginning to warm. It makes no noise at all and is a cheery addition to the work area. There is just a faint odor of a kerosene lantern in the air, but it seems to be very efficient at burning the kerosene into heat and water. I know there has to be a little Carbon Monoxide being produced, but after running it overnight in the garage have felt no symptoms whatever.

I have not tested it while epoxy is being cured. I have considered whether the heater might put out enough droplets of unburned kerosene to cause a chemical problem with curing or adhesion. It does not seem to put out anywhere near enough particulates or aromatics to cause any problem. I have confidence in the next time that I epoxy with it in place.

One of Rob Macks rules of thumb is to make sure you epoxy with falling temperatures so that the bubbles which might form shrink instead of growing. During the winter, with a heater, you have perfect control of the temperature and can make sure that the temperature begins to fall after applying epoxy.

I'd highly suggest this sort of heater.
