: I brought home a kerosene heater. 24000 BTUs. I read the directions
: carefully. It suggested that it could be used indoors, though not in an
: enclosed bathroom. I set it up in the garage and in an hour the 30 degree
: garage was a nice 65 degrees and the cold floor was beginning to warm. It
: makes no noise at all and is a cheery addition to the work area. There is
: just a faint odor of a kerosene lantern in the air, but it seems to be
: very efficient at burning the kerosene into heat and water. I know there
: has to be a little Carbon Monoxide being produced, but after running it
: overnight in the garage have felt no symptoms whatever.
: I have not tested it while epoxy is being cured. I have considered whether
: the heater might put out enough droplets of unburned kerosene to cause a
: chemical problem with curing or adhesion. It does not seem to put out
: anywhere near enough particulates or aromatics to cause any problem. I
: have confidence in the next time that I epoxy with it in place.
: One of Rob Macks rules of thumb is to make sure you epoxy with falling
: temperatures so that the bubbles which might form shrink instead of
: growing. During the winter, with a heater, you have perfect control of the
: temperature and can make sure that the temperature begins to fall after
: applying epoxy.
: I'd highly suggest this sort of heater.
And I would second that
In a former life as a general contractor, I was converting some old moved-in houses to fancy-schmantzie retail spaces, this while in the dead of an unusually cold winter. These particular house shells were still perched up on cribbing because it was too cold to do foundations and thus power and other amenities. No amount of visqueen over any openings helped. Outside temp = inside temp minus any wind chill of course. I purchased a heater similar to the one shown (kerosun was the brand I think). The law had only recently been changed to allow those specific type of heaters to be used in enclosed spaces, because they burned the fuel so efficiently.
I won't say that it produced shirt sleeve conditions, but as I recall it raised the temperature from the single digits to the high forties. And this for an entire house shell. My employees were very happy. I became a believer, and over the years acquired several more, even for use in the home. The only trick is to find a source for bulk kerosene so that you don't have to buy a new can every time you need five more gallons.
As a side note, I used a small heater like this in a previous large old residence to augment the electric heat during the winter at a considerable savings in heating cost. Like I repaid the the cost of the heater in the first few months. The comfort level was wonderful, and I can't recall any oder except a little when first ignited. Then I replaced everything with a natural gas furnace so that I wouldn't have to haul and store kerosene anymore. 8-))

Ron
