Reduce the volume of space you are trying to heat. Someone also raised the question of trying to work in a large unheated barn. I'd use tarps to partition off a work area. It's great to insulate your work area, but that can be expensive. If you can keep the heated air in the smallest possible space, allowing yourself good working room, you've won half the battle.

I recall in the past someone expressed concern about using unvented kerosene heaters because of the amount of moisture they put into the air. I'm not sure how much of a factor that would be, especially in a poorly insulated workspace . . . but in a tightly enclosed one?
