First I'm going to toss in a disclaimer: I have not tried this, yet, but it makes intuitive sense to me and I plan to give it a shot on my next boat if it checks out.
A very knowledgeable but even more abrasive person who is no longer welcome on this board was fond of telling one and all how stupid we were for the layups we used. He also never detailed what he thought were proper layups, but made vague references to generally available technical literature. A few months ago I made one of my sporadic visits to the Bear Mountain Boatshop BBS and found that he had posted some details there. His position is that a stronger layup is achieved when you have a much higher proportion of glass to resin than is possible with hand layup of the usual 6oz. relatively coarse weave glass cloth. He uses several layers of lighter weight satin weave cloth (4 layers of 3 oz. cloth IIRC, but I wouldn't guarantee that) and says that you can achieve a 60/40 ratio with hand layup, which he says is optimal. He also uses 3/16" rather than 1/4" strips.
As I said, this makes intuitive sense to me (which, given my track record, is enough to call it into question) and I'd like to do up some test panels over the winter to see what happens in practice.
I would be interested in comments from some of the more experienced builders on this board
