I tried a new way to mount border strips on the rear deck of my RBA. This boat has a flat rear deck and I had layed out a design on the rear deck and installed border strips to define my design.
I knew it would take quite a few precision fits to strip up to the border inlay.
I had thought about stripping the deck and cutting out the design but got carried away and layed out my pattern the traditional way, which requires making all the taper fits.
Here is what I did--- I hot glued scrap strips accross my border strips to hold their shape and removed the whole design in one piece. the few strips glued together and the hot glued scraps held the whole thing together.
I then stripped the the rear deck without making any precision fits. Enough strips were added to cover the area where the design goes.
I clamped the whole design back on the deck and penciled the outline. I then cut the line out with a small saw and fit the design back in place. The whole job took less than an hour and the fit is perfect.
This is sure a good way to strip quickly without doing a lot of fitting. I may do more of this as I go along, including filling in my borders. This method works well on a flat area but would be more difficult on curved areas.
