I got about 10 strips on each side of the hull of my Razor Bill Auk this weekend. Due to the location of my table saw and my limited shop space, I have been cutting all my strips out of 8’-10’ boards. Initial progress was slow because most strips have 3 scarfs to get a 20’ strip. The first set of strips I milled came out with ragged coves. I took the advice of the board and reverse (climb cut) fed them into my router table with much better results (make sure you use lots of feather boards if you do this.)
The racing design of the hull makes for super easy stripping compared to the Guillemot’s up swept bow. No need for cheater strips. The contrast strip was sawed and glued up from leftover maple molding from my new kitchen cabinets. It is way harder than the cedar so I hope it sands out ok.
I was originally going to do the whole boat stapleless but I have decided to staple the hull go stapleless on the deck. The plan is to have the boat finished so that I can race in the Run of Charles in Boston the last week in April.
