The most important thing you can do for your heater is to be sure that you never allow it to run dry while it's lit. That damages the wick. If you're careful, your heater could easily go for a decade or more with no service at all. You may want to buy an extra wick, just in case. It's possible that it may it become difficult or impossible to find in the future, but I found wicks for my 25+ year old heaters without pretty easily.
