Here's an interesting configuration. Sorry, I can't remember the builder's name. You could also knock-off one of the factory models; It's pretty easy to engineer small parts out of wood... Black Walnut (BW) or a BW/Cedar laminate makes for strong parts. I sometimes fiberglass the board beforehand when making intricate cuts or if I know there is a high likelihood of breakage. The glass dramiatically reduces splitting, etc. You can also coat parts with graphite-impregnated epoxy to help them move better. HDPE would be another interesting material for this application.
