Material: Fir Flooring as raw material

Newbie builder here. Looking for material for skin-on-frame frame. Clear, straight, vertical grain wood is scarce, or expensive... except 1 x 4 square edged fir flooring. Yet I haven't seen it mentioned in any of the books or web sites I've checked. Is there a reason? Has anyone used it? Does it seem reasonable to try?

I'm thinking of trying, but if it's a bad choice it would be better to find out now!

Any help appreciated. Thanks, BV
