Epoxy: Tape Gunk

Getting close to finishing my Guillemot and I temporarily put the thing together with some cheap packing tape I had. I ended up being gone for a week and it sat in the heat of the garage. The tape helped the kayak hold its shape but when I took it off there was a lot of gunk left behind. Now I’m trying to figure out how to get the adhesive back off so I can do the final coat of epoxy and varnish it. I’m using Raka stuff throughout and have a good smooth finish under most of the adhesive.

This is a cheap clear packing tape, comes 5 or 6 rolls to a pack and has no manufacturer marked. I’ve tried using rubbing alcohol, but it only removed the stuff after a lot of rubbing and alcohol and seemed to spread it around more than remove it. I thought to try ‘Goo Gone’ on a sample piece but it didn’t have any better effect than the alcohol, maybe less.

At this point I don’t know what to try next. I know there are solvents or cleaners that will remove this stuff, but I’m willing to lose 2 days to gunk removal rather than mess up the later coats of finish.

I am also starting to worry as Nick's book calls for using fiberglass packing tape to hold the boat together when you glass the inner seam. Has anyone had issues with the good 3M tape leaving excessive adhesive behind? I'm hoping to get to that step before the end of the week.

Thanks

Jim
