You can also save old glass pickle jars and such, and just transfer the leftover to the right size jar. Again, air is the enemy, so use jars that eliminate most of the air.

Also, you can fill the remaining air gap in the jar by doing such things as dropping enough glass marbles into the can/jar to take up the space. Just be sure to use something (like glass) that won't react to the varnish or that the varnish won't easily stick to.

I suppose this works with varnish... I know it works with stain.
