Off Topic: Shipping Kayaks- advice anyone?

There's a gentleman in NY who's interested in purchasing my S&G boat, which is in Milwaukee WI. Can anyone provide info as to how shipping something like a 17 foot kayak works? I'm assuming it'd need to crated and shipped via some form of common carrier..but I'm not quite sure where to start. Any insight would be appreciated!
