S&G: wood for coaming lip

I have been planning on using ash for my coaming lip but have not been able to find any at my local Home Depot or Lowes. Is poplar or oak a good alternative to ash? I am not concerned with looks only if it can be cut into the strips necessary to build up the lip and if it is bendable without a special setup (steamer).

Thanks,

Tony
