Epoxy: How to replace old expoy & glass?

Hello,

I just bought a kayak which needs some repair. (Glass loosened, bad paint). Instead of repairing the damaged spots one by one I think of sanding down the whole thing and laminate the kayak.
I tried this weekend, this is what I found: .. if I sand down the glass with grid 40, the wood is VERY vulnerable, because it is very soft in comparison with the epoxy. Thus I have to be very careful. (and it is really a mess) Another idea is to sand down the glass and leave a thin coat of epoxy (it looks a bit "darker") to prevent the wood from being damaged to much.
What do you think is the best way to do the job?

Regards
Joachim
