Paddle: two part paddle

Hi All,
I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with making a fibreglass or carbon fibre paddle? I've just bought an adjustable ferrule (adjustable for both length and angle) and want to make a paddle shaft and blades from either of the above. My problem is that I want an oval shaft. How do you mold that since the ferrule is round and the blades need the shaft to taper. The easiest way seems to me to do what most commercial paddles do, by adding the oval to the outside of a round shaft, but that increases weight. An internal mold won't be extractable so it will have to be light. My only idea so far is to steam a piece of pvc tubing and flatten it some. Then split the ends and form the taper for the blades, and put in a piece of round tube in the middle which is extractable. Then wrap everything in epoxy and glass or fibre. Does anyone have a better idea?
