Skin-on-Frame: filling the weave

I didn't quite fill the weave on my SOF and am wanting to fill it the rest of the way since season is ending. Would a scotch brite pad be enough to insure a good mechanical bond or does polyurethane work on a chemical bond? Will sanding the skin do any damage? I used Helmsman spar varnish.
How bout that WR18 vs. Coho debate! Talk about smoke on the water.
