I like my Snapdragon backband so much I'm going to install one in the Merganser instead of using the included wood-backed one. I had already decided to use the slots in the hip plate (which I will glass on both sides before installing). That takes care of the band's side straps. But it also has two adjustable bungie cords in back that run through a D-ring that requires drilling into the deck just in back of the coaming. I'd rather not drill into the deck; do you have any recommendations for alternatives? I'm thinking I should cut a 2x4 (sealed with epoxy) to fit vertically between floor and deck and glue that in place behind the seat and backband, then drill an attachment fixture into THAT for the D-ring. That way, any stress from backband loading goes through intermediate structures (cheek plate and vertical bar) rather than directly to the kayak shell itself.

Also, do you recommend an extra layer of glass on the cockpit recess panel (the one with the "ears" for the thigh braces)? I am going to pad it with minicell thigh braces but there will still be a fair amount of stress (I think) on the "ears" during rolling and edging.
