: The standard CLC design is to put
: in vertical plywood hip braces alongside the seat. I think I could get
: more flotation/less water in the boat by padding out hip braces all the
: way to the sides of the hull, and would get to skip this part of the
: construction. I don't see any disadvantages to this - Does anyone else?
: Would solid minicell hip braces be rigid enough?

I remember (from my youth, when I took an interest in these things) that
Formula 1 racing drivers get a perfect fitting seat by sitting on what is
essentially just a big plastic bag, into which is then pumped a fairly
quick-setting polyurethane foam. It strikes me that this might be an
effective way to make both the seat and hip braces, and fill out all the
cockpit space that you don't want to use for accessible gear storage.
I think most of this foam is closed cell, but there may be a bit of openness
at the surface - if so you could always coat it with an impervious layer
to seal it. Maybe even with a layer of glass and epoxy which would add
considerably to its strength.

Has anyone tried anything like this ?

Andy
