Hi all,

I am making a custom seat for my S&G kayak. I have the foam carved and ready to glue to the boat. My first attempt was not too good. For the seat back I put two coats of Weldwood contact cement on the foam piece and on the rear bulkhead. Since the piece also contacts the bottom of the hull I also coated that part of the boat. Since the hull bottom and the bulkhead make a 90 degree bend I knew I would not be able to position the foam piece on both the bulkhead and the hull. So I put some Saran wrap on the bottom part of the bulkhead and hull. I figured I would position the foam piece and push it against the upper part of the bulkhead, then pull out the Saran wrap to stick the piece to the bottom of the bulkhead and the hull below. I waited 20 minutes for the cement to dry before adding the Saran wrap.

Well the Saran wrap stuck to the bulkhead. I managed to recover the piece of foam and washed the Saran wrap off of the boat with solvent (with much difficulty).

Is there an easy way to install a piece of foam onto two surfaces 90 degrees apart? Can it be done with contact cement? Should I use say contact cement on the bulkhead and perhaps 3m 5200 on the hull to permit some slide during installation?

For the back piece of the seat I can trim off the bottom of the foam so it does not contact the hull, and therefore just worry about aligning it with the rear bulkhead. But I will have other pieces of foam where I would like to stick them on two or three surfaces 90 degrees apart, so I can still use a little advice. Would wax paper work better than Saran wrap?

My idea was to glue all the pieces into the cockpit and then use a 4.5" grinder to shape the bottom of the seat and the seatback.
