Actually the stripes were painted because the orriginal spar varnish used was very amber in color and after painting over the caulk the stripes looked yellow, so were painted white on top of the varnish for appearance.

Real fun job, after you stain and apply up to 20 coats of varnish you get to paint white stripes on top of it all. Bad time to mess up
