I tend to agree and I think a lot of people use a plane to remove the high spots as well as glue residue for several reasons. 1. you don't need electricty. 2. a plane set very fine - running with the strips does a nice job or removing the strip edges. 3. no saw dust 4. It an enjoyable tool to use 5. cutting away glue works better than sanding it.

In a model making or tool making shop you would be fired using a flat sander on a rounded surface. Everything is sanded with flexible, long sanding boards. I've been to commercial kayak manufacturers and all sanding of the plugs is with long flexible sanding boards.

Robs method is totally valid and the proof is in the outcome - Rob make beautiful boats. And his point of not flattening out the surfaces is correct. But I think nipping off high spots with a fine plane works well and I'll bet most people do that and switch to sanding once that's done.
